Everyone you meet is fighting a personal battle that you know nothing about. Your act of kindness could be the very thing they need to be victorious. Your kindness could be the encouragement someone needs to keep living.
I recently heard a high school graduation speech delivered by the classes’ Valedictorian. He thanked all his teachers and adults who had been instrumental in his life the last four years. But he gave his greatest heartfelt thanks to classmate who barely knew him. Apparently this classmate was kind to him on the day he planned to commit suicide. Because of this act kindness, he decided he wanted live.
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another. Romans 12:10
To be consistently kind requires a mindset that has this priority: God 1st, others 2nd, and you last. Now I know this mindset goes against nature’s self preservation attitude, but kindness is expected and commanded by God.
For some reason today our society doesn’t put a premium on being kind to others as it did in former generations. Maybe because so much is happening so fast that taking the time to be kind can seem like a major inconvenience. However, when we take that time it pays big dividends to not only the recipient of our kindness, but ourselves as well.
Here are a few reasons to motivate you to be kind:
Kindness is a Seed
When you sow kindness in the lives of others, you can expect to receive kindness when you need it the most. I don’t care how on top of your game you are or how fabulous your life is now, one day you are going to need someone to be kind to you.
I shutter the thought of living in old age and not being able to expect kindnes because the majority of my life I was rude. God forbid!
Kindness Feeds Your Spirit
Your soul is the gateway to the spirit realm and whatever you allow to pass through you feeds you. For example, when you allow the Holy Spirit to love through you, He feeds you love. When you allow wealth to pass through you, He feeds you with wealth. Literally your soul (mind, will, and emotions) becomes full of love or wealth, or whatever you give. So it is with kindness, as you show kindness, you become kindness.
Part of Fruit of the Spirit is kindness. That means that the Holy Spirit is diligently at work developing kindness as a part of your character. That also means that you have supernatural power to be kind. We tap into this power by asking Him at the point the decision is being made.
So the next time you have the opportunity to be kind to someone in need, take the time and please be kind.
